How Do You Connect (and work with) Your Spirit Guides?

You weren’t the only person who asked this question and so that must mean it is a very good question! I have spent a while researching Spirit Guides and asking others what they know about them! Usually I don’t go into quite as much detail, but I got such fascinating information that I decided to take it a little further! Since it is sooo much information, I will list the basic information and then you can follow the link to get to the more detailed stuff!

I will bring the information to you in the same order as I received it! You can follow me along the journey of Connecting to Your Spirit Guides!

Take what you want from it and develop it in a way that fits you! That goes for all of you that are reading this!

THE BEGINNING

There, Spirit Guide is defined as follows: "A being or energy which has no material body, although it has that potential open to it to do so that it may again incarnate on the earth if it chooses to do so. A Spirit Guide is a highly evolved spirit who has spent many incarnations on the earth and has grown in spirituality and purity. For the Spirit Guide, earth lessons are no longer necessary." It continues, "A Spirit Guide may only communicate when called upon and asked for assistance. The assistance may be in the form of guidance, protection or attention to a specific matter. The Spirit Guide will serve but will never step in without being asked. The Spirit Guide’s purpose is to assist the soul in reaching its most perfect state. However, understand that if the Spirit Guide is asked to assist in some way that the Guide sees as not for the highest good of the one who is asking, the Guide will first ask the individual if this is truly what he or she wants and may even issue a warning that a particular path is not for the highest good but will still help if it is the persons’ wish."

Gold then goes on to define Spirit Teacher. "Similar to Spirit Guide but at a higher level in the hierarchy of spirit beings. The Spirit Teacher is not given the opportunity to incarnate again. The Spirit Teacher has learned all the lessons that can be provided on earth and is therefore given the distinction of teacher. The Spirit Teacher can be asked for advice, similar to the Spirit Guide, but will give assistance only in the way of knowledge."

Sue-Ryn recommended a book (you can get it on her web site called Dancing with the Devas by Trish Telesco. This book was a big help to better understand Devas (the Elementals or what most people think of as the fairies) and how to work with them.

Trish Telesco defines Devas as: "the semi-divine Elemental entities of Spirit, Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. Each element has specific correspondences with the directions, moon phases, astrological signs, plants, animals and attributes. And each Elemental - and the benefits and powers they bestow - can be accessed directly by various means, methods and techniques."

The next Spirit Guide that I researched for you is the Angelic Realm. First I went to Barnes and Nobel and talked to a wonderful and knowledgeable lady, named Juno! If you are ever in the Syracuse area looking for information on these types of books, she’s the one to talk to! She found a few books for me. Neither of us had read the book called Spirit Guides & Angel Guardians, by Richard Webster.

These are things I found out about Angels

THE ANGELIC REALM

Pulling out the old Oxford Dictionary, I find Angel defined as: "An attendant or messenger of God, usually shown in pictures as a being in human form with wings and dressed in long white robes."

The New Age A to Z has Angel defined much more detailed: "The title of a level achieved in the multi leveled or hierarchical etheric world intelligence. This level of achievement is gained over many lifetimes of purifying the spirit or by coming up through the ranks, first as a nature spirit. Angels are "messengers" as the Greek root word indicates.... Angels don’t have earthly bodies. However, they can lower the vibratory rate of their bodies and make appearances in what look like human bodies. When asked, angels bring help and wisdom to those on earth. They are asked either consciously or unconsciously."

The Native Americans and other nature oriented cultures tend to have Animal Spirits that they call upon. It is not the same as we think of Spirit Guides. Each type of animal possesses it’s own Spirit Medicine or Power. When one calls on the spirit of the particular animal, they are asking for the ability to possess it’s strong point (Medicine or Power). They are not asking for guidance or direction in the same way that we ask guidance from our Spirit Guides. For Animal Medicine, I referred to the book, Medicine Cards, by Sams and Carson. They say that Medicine refers anything that improves one’s connection to the Great Mystery and to all of life. They also say that it includes healing of body, mind and spirit. Medicine can also be anything which brings personal power, strength and understanding.

What do you think of as an ancestor? Sue-Ryn and I came up with a few suggestions

A Deceased Relative that you knew like a parent or a grandparent?

A Deceased Relative from your family line like a Great-Great Uncle?

The Collective Consciousness or someone from the Family Heritage?

The Collective Consciousness or someone from your Race or Faith?

The Collective Consciousness or someone from a past life?

Yourself in a previous incarnation? That one could spark a lot of thought

Here are some other thoughts

A Spiritual Teacher that has passed on?

A religious figure such as Jesus or Mary?

A Master or Ascended Master?

A person or Soul that chooses to help you that had no relationship to you or your past lives?

Often when you Connect to any type of Spirit Guide, the same rules that works for one type will often work with another. For example, setting up an altar or being respectful is a wonderful way to honor and attract your Guide. There are specific things to keep in mind about each group, so we will start with The Elementals, then go to the Angelic realm, and finish with calling on the Animal Medicines.

Sue-Ryn, my fairy expert, gave me a run down of the major points and she recommends the book called Dancing with Devas by Trish Telesco, which filled in the rest! In this Link you will find not only some do’s and do not’s but also how to attract and honor the Elementals or any Spirit Guide you are looking for! You will find information on creating an altar and sacred space as well as tips on getting into the right "Head Space"!

So, as you are seeing, working with and contacting you Spirit Guides is not like picking up the telephone and dialing 911! Does it have to be this intense? No, but if you want to build a meaningful relationship with your Spirit Guide (or anyone for that matter) these steps will be very helpful and by showing your serious intent, I promise, you will find your results rewarding!

We now look at the "How To" of Angelic Connection.

In this section you will find different ways to experience your Angelic Guides (as well as other Guides you might choose,) plus the Four Fundamentals of Living successfully while working with the Angels!

In this section you will learn, step by step, how to start to hear your Angel Guide and write it down!

The Authors include an answer that the Angels gave when asked:

"Practice, practice, practice. Just as you have learned anything. Pray for guidance, insight. Remain open to the skill and allow it to come to you. Remember, all knowledge is already within you... Knowledge will come to you in many ways. Through study. Through dreams. Through experience... In order to connect with us in writing, all you need to do is pray, breathe, listen, write, accept, follow your inner knowing, and trust."

The next step in my journey was to go to Borders and pick up this great book called Rainbow Spirit Journeys, by Wolf Moondance. I wanted to offer an exercise that you could do yourself to connect with your Spirit Guide and this book has many.

Sams and Carson, of the Medicine Cards, say that in learning to call on the medicine of any person, creature or natural force, one must maintain an attitude or reverence and be willing to accept assistance. You need to be open and receptive to what ever way they decide to come to you. You can call on the power or medicine of an animal when in need of it’s specific talent.

Spirit journeys allow you to get to know the counsel of your spirit. Within the journeys that you take here, you will meet your Spirit Guides: the guide of your emotions, the guide of your body, the guide of your mind, the guide of your spirit. You will meet the spirit who guides and guards you on the earth. You will also meet your protecting spirit, which is your guardian spirit.

When you are working with spirits it is important to understand that you bring back in thought only what your spirit guide tells you. It can be a thought or a memory or an object. Record everything that you hear, smell, feel, and see. Everything around you, everything on the journey is a part of the message to be interpreted at the end.

Some find it helpful to record the words into a tape recorder and then play it back for the actual journey.

This section gives you some steps to think about and follow while journeying to allow you the fullest and most rewarding experience!

This section is the actual journey! I highly recommend reading this section out loud into a tape recorder and replaying it for the actual journey! You might want to look at the steps to attract the Elementals for suggestions for creating a sacred space for your journey as well as following the tips for successful journeying found in the previous section!

You will find that many of the ways mentioned for the Elementals, Angels, Animals and journeying will also bring you into connection with the Ancestors.

Good luck on your journey to Connect with your Spirit Guide, no matter what road that journey leads you to, it is bound to be an adventure!
