Tips for Successful Journeying

This section gives you some steps to think about and follow while journeying to allow you the fullest and most rewarding experience!

1. Be sure you are in a comfortable place, a safe place, a place where your privacy is respected.

2. Make sure you are warm, or that you are cool enough, so that you are comfortable. Comfort is the step before relaxation, and relaxation is the step before letting loose, letting go.

3. The next thing you do is to make sure you have your journey notebook, diary, or tape recorder to catch your experiences, because they flit by fast.

4. The next step is to breathe and not be focused on any teaching or fear. For you are going to experience a spiritual trip.

5. Do not force it, but allow your mind to create. Do not make an image happen in your mind, for that would be fantasy or imagination. Just allow your mind to float, to be free-form, and travel-focused—looking, expecting. It is important in this step, when you are journeying, to expect and not to force. Forcing brings in a preconceived idea, while expecting is looking forward to the new.

6. Gather everything that you can when you journey, meaning, think. Remember think. Remember quickly. Hold on to it, bring it back and journal.

7. Next is coming back. Let go. Only take things in your thoughts that you are told to bring back. An ancestor spirit, a teacher spirit, a spirit on its own may say, "Bring this back with you." Only take what you are told to bring back. Never covet or hang on to any thoughts within journey.

8. The next step is coming back into physicality, where you will feel yourself actually moving into your body, for you are thinking yourself physical again. The breath of life, which is constant—the heartbreak of the earth, the pulsation of the ocean, the expansion of air—will keep you alive, for it is your will to breathe.

9. When you return, it is good to stop for just a moment and feel yourself. Think of your feet, your legs, your body becoming awake again in the fullness of your spirit entering into your body Has your spirit left your body? No. It has expanded. Not disconnected, which is what "left" means. To leave is to disconnect. To expand is what you do when you journey You allow your physical to release and allow you to go, which is an expansion of where you are. When you have returned and you have begun to feel yourself being solid, open your eyes wide. You’ll notice sometimes you need to yawn. This is a balancing of chemicals within the physical brain itself. It is an actual combining of matter with resonant energy.

10. It’s time to write down or speak into the tape recorder (I use a tape recorder because that’s how I can get it down fast enough). For all of you with quick minds, get a tape recorder. Get everything down that you can from your journey. Begin to interpret your journey and list that in your journal. You do that by coming up with a complete rendition of what you just saw, felt, heard, smelled, and tasted. Bring it into realization. You can use the interpretation guides in the back of the book, along with dream dictionaries, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other books that bring forth knowledge and help you apply the spiritual journey within your life. Construct your interpretation of what the journey means to you and how it sets forth a path for you to follow. Often your journey becomes your walk. It is so powerful, it is so wonderful, that there is nothing that can keep you away from the spirit of your existence.

11. The last movement of the journey is application.
