The Bus, the Boat and the Helicopter
or Allah has no
Hands.

Did
I ever tell you the one about the Camel Driver’s Son? No, it’s not a bad joke;
it is one of my favorite spiritual parables! The Camel driver and his son are
coming off the caravan trail for the night and the Father tells his son to tie
up the camels before he comes in for dinner. The next morning they go out and
the camels are gone! The camel driver says, “Son, didn’t you tie up the camels?”
The son replies, “you always told me Allah will take care of everything.” The
father said “Yes Son, But Allah has no hands!”
What is this story telling us? Yes, Spirit will help us, yet we have to meet
half way with our own effort! I had a client recently who asked if she would
write a book. I thought I was in the middle of a bad joke when my guidance was
telling me “Yes, if she sits in front of the typewriter and types!” So, learning
by now not to edit, I told her what I heard and she said, “So I’m not going to
write a book?” I took a deep breath and told her that “the energy is good and it
looked like it could be a successful book, but God isn’t going to come down and
type it for you.” Surprisingly she didn’t hang up on me and we continued on with
the session.

So often I meet people who think that Spirit will take care of everything and
they don’t have to do anything more than pray for what they want. I am not
saying that prayer isn’t helpful. It is amazing what a good prayer will put in
motion, but we have to take the energy that Spirit puts in motion and manifest
it here. For me, when I need money for something…. Say a computer…. I put out in
prayer how much I need and then I have to pick up the phone when it rings. That
is my part of putting the energy that Spirit starts into motion. I don’t expect
to win the lotto to pay for it; I just expect that my phone will ring with
clients. I have found is that if I answer my phone right away instead of letting
the machine pick up, my business increases substantially! So that is our
agreement. If I need something, I have to answer the phone and I will get enough
business to cover my expense. I think our frustrations start when we don’t
always think the energy should manifest in the way that Spirit does! Spirit
might help you manifest what you need by offering you a good day job to help pay
bills while you start your business when you would rather that Spirit sends
enough clients. We don’t always have what we think we need, but I strongly feel
we get what we need. As a side note, I find when I am looking at my clients as
dollar signs, they don’t come. When I feel supported enough that I don’t need
the clients to pay my bills, they fly in! So, when someone asks me about
starting a business, I suggest that they not quit the day job until their new
business can pay for itself.
I think this idea that “Spirit doesn’t have hands” plays into daily life as
well. I always pray to arrive safely when driving at night. I ask that the
little and big animals stay out of the road, but I also slow down in wooded
areas!
So, all I am saying is that, Yes, Spirit watches over us and provides us the
opportunity to create, attract or what ever catch phrase you want to use…. “to
get what we need” but don’t forget the importance of recognizing when Spirit is
working with us and then work with the energy that Spirit sends us to achieve
our goal. This reminds me of one more story…
There was a terrible storm coming and this man’s house was in the middle of the
flood area. A bus came by and the announcement was blaring… “This area is going
to flood! Come on the bus!” The man said “No, I will stay here, God will save
me,” and he prayed for help. The flood came and soon the water was up to the
second story when a boat came by. The man on the boat offered him a ride to
safety, yet the man replied “No, I will stay here, God will save me,” and he
prayed for help. Finally the water had risen up to the roof and a helicopter
came overhead and the man on the roof said “No, I will stay here, God will save
me,” and he prayed for help. Finally the water rose even higher and the man,
long longer able to tread water, drown. When he got to heaven he asked God. “Why
didn’t you save me? I prayed so much?” God said “but I tried. I sent a bus, a
boat and a helicopter!”
